In the NetCDA II subproject – GRP1 Nigeria, the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) is continuing to pursue a long-term approach to strengthening and improving the networking of academic education on climate change and adaptation strategies in West Africa as part of the graduate schools of the West African Science Service Centre on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use (WASCAL). The long-term approach is achieved in three steps: (i) First, KIT supports the sixth cohort of WASCAL doctoral students from the partner Doctoral Research Program “West African Climate Systems” (DRP-WACS) at the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA; Nigeria) in continuing and successfully completing their doctorates. The doctoral students are supervised by the KIT supervision team in their research projects, particularly during their stay as visiting scientists at KIT, during the supervision team's trips to West Africa, and via online meetings. (ii) In the medium term, KIT contributes to strengthening the German network of WASCAL graduate schools, and (iii) in the long term, KIT supports the initiation of an academic network that brings together active climate change researchers from Europe and Africa in a network.
