Coarse particles and high resolution simulations
This year, two members of the Mineral Dust group travelled to Vienna, Austria for the annual European Geosciences Union (EGU) General Assembly week-long conference from 3-8 May 2026.
Natalie Ratcliffe presented her research in the “Aeolian Dust: Initiator, Player, and Recorder of Environmental Change” PICO session on Monday morning, co-convened by Martina Klose. A PICO session comprises a 2 minute taster presentation, followed by a discussion period standing by an interactive touch-screen. Natalie presented work from both her PhD at the University of Reading and from her postdoc at KIT regarding the long-range transport of coarse mineral dust particles in observations and models [1].
Martina Klose presented in the “EarthCARE’s Second Year in Orbit: Advances in Cloud, Aerosol, and Radiation Science” session on the second day of the conference. The work presented was produced by multiple members of the group for the EarthCARE-ORCESTRA Model Intercomparison Project (ECOMIP) for which high resolution ICON-ART and ICON-HAM-lite simulations have been conducted and analysed relative to retrievals from the EarthCARE satellite and data from the ORCESTRA field campaign [2].
