IMKTRO Supports Media Art Installation as Part of the “media art is here 2026” Exhibition

IMKTRO provides a weather station and climate data for the interactive installation meteo flux in Karlsruhe.

How can weather and climate change be experienced not only through measurements, but also through the senses? This question lies at the heart of the interactive media art installation meteo flux – a Symphony of the Atmosphere by Karlsruhe-based artist Lucile Schwörer-Merz. As part of the exhibition “media art is here 2026”, the Institute of Meteorology and Climate Research Troposphere Research (IMKTRO) at KIT supports the project with meteorological infrastructure and scientific data.

For the installation, IMKTRO provides both a weather station and climate data. Real-time meteorological measurements collected by the station, together with long-term climate records, form the basis of the artistic concept. This allows current weather conditions and climatic changes to be incorporated directly into the installation, making atmospheric processes tangible and accessible to visitors.

At the center of meteo flux is a tree sculpture that responds to changing weather conditions through sound, light, and vibration. Current temperatures are continuously compared with the long-term average of the past 40 years. Deviations from this climatological reference are transformed into audible, visible, and tactile experiences. The installation is complemented by several living trees, each functioning as an individual sound sculpture. Temperature, rain, wind, and sunshine influence the composition, while visitors themselves become part of the experience through their movement within the installation. The result is a dynamic interplay between nature, technology, and human interaction.

Lucile Schwörer-Merz is a media artist whose work focuses on installations and multimedia spatial concepts that connect scientific, social, and artistic perspectives. Her projects explore environmental perception and investigate the relationships between humans, nature, and technology. Through site-specific installations, she creates new ways of experiencing environmental processes and ecological change.

meteo flux is part of “media art is here 2026”, a city-wide exhibition taking place from August 13 to September 13, 2026, at various locations across Karlsruhe. The exhibition presents media art projects that address contemporary social and environmental challenges and translate scientific insights into new artistic forms. Through the collaboration between art and science, meteo flux offers visitors a unique opportunity to experience weather and climate data beyond traditional charts and statistics.
